Along with new features and brand-new content, Dragon Quest VIII carries the legacy of an iconic, groundbreaking installment
After the release of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past on September 16, 2016, the legendary series returns to Nintendo 3DS with one of its most iconic installments: Dragon Quest VIII: The Cursed King's Odyssey, arriving on January 20, 2017.

An iconic, groundbreaking installment in a legendary franchise!
- The Cursed King's Odyssey was the first Dragon Quest, the legendary and pioneering RPG series, to be released in Europe, allowing countless players to discover this fantastic saga through its beautiful graphics, enchanting music and charismatic characters.
- It was also the first installment to be created entirely in 3D! For the first time, a Dragon Quest was fully rendered in 3D, giving it a special place in players' memories. Akira Toriyama's characters, created by the famous manga artist and game character designer, had never been so expressive and detailed! For the first time, this visual approach also brought animation to the heroes during exploration and battles, without ever compromising the smooth flow of combat, one of the series' defining features.
- A collaboration between prestigious studios! Alongside Square Enix and the saga's original creators—Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama—Level-5, the developer behind series such as Professor Layton and Ni no Kuni, created this legendary odyssey!
- An unusual and original quest: Dragon Quest VIII also left its mark on many players with an original odyssey that broke away from familiar storylines. This time, the goal is not to save the world from an apocalypse. Instead, you must rescue a king: your king, cursed and betrayed by his evil jester, the wicked Dhoulmagus. After stealing the magical scepter, Dhoulmagus transformed the monarch into a greenish troll, the princess into a mare, and the entire kingdom was petrified and overrun with brambles. But one person survived this nightmare for mysterious reasons: you.
A refreshed and optimized version on Nintendo 3DS, almost 10 years later!
To celebrate the release of this iconic installment on Nintendo 3DS, numerous additions have been made to offer a new experience, even for players who already journeyed through the adventure in 2006:- A timeless royal quest to experience or relive on a handheld console for the first time!
- New content revealing more about the dark traitor Dhoulmagus's past, as well as the young royal guard who becomes the Hero of this unlikely adventure!
- A new alternate ending has also been added, along with the ability to team up with 2 new characters in your party of adventurers to defeat the dark Dhoulmagus!
- A more dynamic and modern version on Nintendo 3DS: monsters now appear in real time, making it easy to take the shortest route by avoiding battles—or, conversely, to gain as much experience as possible by taking on every encounter. It is also now possible to save your progress at any time during the adventure without having to find a church where you can rest!
- A Photo function has also been added, allowing players to take pictures and customize them before sharing them through StreetPass and obtaining new items.
