Phantom Blade Zero is an action-adventure game developed by S-GAME, scheduled for release on October 29, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and PC. Players take on the role of Soul, a warrior accused of murdering his master and sentenced to live for only 66 days. Set in a fantastical kung-fu universe that the studio calls "kungfupunk," the game promises fast-paced combat, a vast arsenal and an adventure combining martial arts, mystery and folklore horror.
This overview brings together the information shared by S-GAME, PlayStation and Steam before release. Elements that still need to be confirmed in-game are presented as expectations rather than test conclusions.
When is Phantom Blade Zero being released?
Phantom Blade Zero launches on October 29, 2026, for PS5 and PC. S-GAME announced this date in its official delay letter, after moving the launch from its initially planned date of September 9. The game is available to pre-order on PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The Steam page may show October 28 for some players depending on their time zone and unlock time. In France, S-GAME's announcement and the PlayStation pages list October 29. This display difference does not mean that any edition has confirmed early access.
At launch, the announced platforms are PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. No Xbox or Nintendo Switch version had been announced by the studio at the time this article was checked.

A story of revenge and survival in a wuxia world
Players control Soul, a member of an organization called the Order. After being accused of murdering his master, he is gravely wounded and saved by a remedy that leaves him with only 66 days to live. He must then pursue those responsible for the conspiracy, untangle the alliances surrounding him and find a way to escape this deadline.
The story takes place in the Phantom World, a fictional universe inspired by wuxia, a genre of Chinese stories centered on martial-arts masters and wandering warriors. S-GAME combines fantastical elements, strange technologies and an atmosphere of folklore horror. The studio uses the term "kungfupunk" to describe this blend of traditional martial arts and more modern fantasy.
The 66-day limit gives the story its central stakes. It remains to be seen how the game will portray it: as a genuinely defining countdown, a narrative device or a mechanic that influences the player's choices. This point should be checked during play rather than inferred from the marketing presentation alone.

A fast-paced action game focused on combat
The trailers show a third-person action game in which players chain attacks, dodges, parries and counterattacks. Soul battles groups of enemies as well as opponents capable of punishing overly predictable moves. The pace appears fast and choreographed, with weapon changes incorporated into combos.
The game is often compared with Soulslikes because of its demanding combat and boss encounters. However, this label does not fully describe how it works. S-GAME instead emphasizes action built around weapons, techniques and reading enemy attacks. The studio has also confirmed several difficulty levels. Players will therefore have to wait for hands-on feedback to determine the extent of combat customization and the exact role of progression. The State of Play dedicated to the game showed various techniques, bosses and exploration sequences. Actor and martial-arts choreographer Donnie Yen serves as a creative consultant, helping shape the kung-fu style of the animations and combat. He also contributes facial and motion capture for Mó Yuán, Soul's father, as explained by the PlayStation Blog. His involvement raises expectations for readable and convincing encounters, but does not by itself guarantee their quality when played.

An announced arsenal of more than 30 main weapons
S-GAME says the game will feature more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons, known as Phantom Edges. Players will be able to equip different combinations to vary their attacks and adapt to enemies. Weapons are presented as a major part of the combat style, rather than merely cosmetic changes.
PlayStation also confirms that weapons can be upgraded and reforged, and that invested materials can be recovered. This flexibility should make it possible to experiment with different equipment without permanently losing the resources spent; the official presentation does not yet detail the cost or limits of these operations.
The variety of this arsenal raises several practical questions: will weapons have clear differences in range, speed and power? Will some be especially suited to bosses or groups? Will the game make it easy to change equipment between encounters? The answer will determine whether weapon choice truly changes how the game is played.
The released images highlight blades, imposing weapons and spectacular techniques. The challenge will be preserving combat readability when several effects, enemies and animations appear on screen at once.

Will Phantom Blade Zero be difficult?
Phantom Blade Zero will offer three modes: Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days. Wayfarer is designed to prioritize the story, Hellwalker offers a greater challenge with more adaptive enemy AI, and Sixty-Six Days is aimed at the most experienced players. These profiles are presented by PlayStation; the detailed settings for each mode will need to be assessed in-game.
The difficulty levels will have to be evaluated based on their concrete effects: damage taken, enemy aggression, parry windows, boss resistance and recovery options. Accessibility will also depend on the options available for controls, text, subtitles and visual effects. Consult the official PlayStation page for the up-to-date list of accessibility features, which may change before launch.
For players concerned about the difficulty, the presence of settings is an encouraging sign. However, it is not yet possible to know whether each mode maintains the same pace or whether certain encounters require specific mechanics.
Exploration, side missions and content
Phantom Blade Zero is not limited to a succession of arenas. S-GAME has presented areas to explore, characters to meet and side missions that may flesh out the story of the Wulin, the world of martial-arts fighters and schools. Some optional activities could also reveal more about the characters and conflicts shaping the adventure.
The studio has not yet established a definitive playtime that can be recommended as a guarantee. The length of the story will depend in particular on the number of quests, the selected difficulty and the time spent exploring. Until these details are known in-game, it is better to avoid precise estimates or promises of dozens of hours.
The point to watch will be the balance between combat and narrative downtime. Varied areas, memorable encounters and quests integrated into the world would help give the game depth beyond the quality of its animations.

Editions, pre-orders and demo
Pre-orders are open on PS5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Several editions are available depending on the store and region. Since contents and prices may vary, check your platform's page directly before ordering.

What to expect from Phantom Blade Zero
Phantom Blade Zero has already attracted attention thanks to its visually dense combat, fantastical Chinese setting and announced arsenal. Expectations now focus on how these elements will work together in a complete adventure.
Combat that is as precise as it is spectacular: animations must remain readable, while dodges, parries and counterattacks must respond clearly to player input.
Well-balanced difficulty: the different modes should broaden access to the game without making encounters artificially easy or excessively punishing.
Genuinely distinct weapons: a generous arsenal will be interesting if each piece of equipment offers a recognizable and useful approach.
An adventure that makes use of the 66 days: Soul's deadline should give weight to the story and its decisions, rather than serving as a simple presentation hook.
A world worth exploring: side missions and areas should enrich the story and vary the pace between battles.
Solid PC performance: the published requirements are accessible to a large number of configurations, but only the final version will show how well optimized the game really is.
These points are criteria to examine after release, not flaws or qualities that have already been established. Game.fr may supplement this overview with a review once the final version has been assessed.
