Character story & background

Who is Mephistopheles Yōma?

Born from darkness, Yōma is the incarnation of a fallen god of time—also known as Kairos—in the world of Saint Seiya: Awakening – Knights of the Zodiac. Saint Seiya

Once a servant of time imprisoned in a human body, he broke free to spread chaos. Cruel and elegant, he manipulates time as others manipulate a blade. Saint Seiya

When the Summon event was announced, the forums came alive:

“Yōma is the monster everyone fears but dreams of summoning.” YouTube

Fun facts

  • The name “Mephistopheles” evokes the demon from the Faust myth, “the one who does not love the light.” Saint Seiya

  • The wiki says that Yōma planted seeds of darkness in the hearts of several Saints before killing them, playing with time itself. Wikipedia

  • YouTube shows a “very hard pull” for Yōma, highlighting how obtaining this character has become a rite of passage for some. YouTube

The light faltered. The cosmos held its breath. Among the ruins of a forgotten temple, Yōma appeared—sharp silhouette, dark suit, a pocket watch slipping through the shadow of his fingers.
“Time has betrayed you all,” he murmured, his voice soft as a blade. “And I am the moment you never saw coming.”
He spun the watch: tick-tock… tick-tock… then everything stopped. Frozen rain suspended its drops in the air, birds held back their song, and the heroes froze in mid-stride. And he struck.
The wind of the past crumpled against him, and the echoes of ancient battles awoke. He did not simply kill: he erased, rewrote and reshaped the flesh of time.
When the moment resumed its course, Yōma was gone. The temple still trembled. The survivors wondered: “Was he a man… or time given form?”
For when Yōma opens the door, eternity enters. And whoever summons time may well end up trapped… in their own saber.
