In Dying Light, a first-person shooter, the game's action is survival horror. Players must use every resource at their disposal to survive until the first light of morning in a vast open world filled with danger. During the day, players can explore an expansive urban environment overrun by a vicious epidemic, constantly searching for food, ammunition and makeshift weapons to defend themselves against the growing infected population.

At night, the hunter becomes the prey, and the infected become much more aggressive and dangerous. The most frightening threat remains the predators that appear only after sunset.

Although the game bears a striking resemblance to another title popularized by developer Techland, Dead Island, Dying Light aims to offer something deeper than other survival horror games. To emphasize this further, Warner Bros. announced a new pre-order-exclusive mode for Dying Light called "Be the Zombie." As its name suggests, this mode lets players take control of a member of the horde and fight alongside their fellow zombies for supremacy of the night.

While games such as Left 4 Dead have given players the chance to step into the shoes of the undead, Dying Light puts players in control of a unique type of zombie called the hunter. In Dying Light, hunters are zombies that should not be taken lightly; they are the reason players will want to reach the shelters before sunset during the campaign. For players, the idea of zombie players fighting one another rather than facing some kind of cult could add a unique twist to the typical multiplayer experience.

Dead Island, for example, brought human players together and had them try to survive against zombie AI, whereas "Be the Zombie" removes the human element entirely. Or at least, that is what the press release suggests. Although details are scarce regarding this player-versus-player zombie mode, we know that it is exclusively included with all Dying Light pre-orders. Why Techland or Warner Bros. decided to lock an intriguing multiplayer experience behind a paid pre-order is somewhat puzzling, but they may explain this decision in due course. Players still have time to decide whether to pre-order.
