PS Vita in 2026: Games, Buying Advice and Tips for Beginners

By Filo · · 5 min read
Last checked: October 27, 2026. The PS Vita remains an interesting handheld for its dedicated games, portable versions of well-known series and independent catalog. However, buying a Vita today requires checking the console's condition, the cost of memory cards and access to digital games. Another deadline also changes the situation: Sony plans to close the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita in July 2027.

Which model should you choose?

The original Vita (PCH-1000 series) uses an OLED screen and a proprietary cable; the PCH-2000, often called the Slim, is lighter, has an LCD screen and a micro-USB port. The choice mainly depends on the condition, price and screen you prefer. The PlayStation TV is a living-room device compatible with a selection of Vita games: do not choose it if your goal is portable gaming, and check compatibility on a title-by-title basis.

What should you play?

Among the games designed for the console, you can look at Persona 4 Golden, Gravity Rush, Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Tearaway. Ports and independent games round out the catalog. However, check the exact version: some games exist on several platforms but do not offer the same features, languages or performance. To put together a starting list, prioritize the genres you enjoy rather than relying on a universal ranking.

Buying a Vita and its games in 2026

When buying a second-hand console, test the sticks, buttons, triggers, touchscreen, Wi-Fi, card reader and charging port. Ask whether the PSN account can be properly deactivated and whether accessories are included. The Vita uses proprietary memory cards for many purposes; their price and condition should be included in your budget. Cartridges avoid this expense for some games, but updates and expansions may still require a download. Sony says the Vita Store will close in July 2027. After that date, digital purchases will no longer be possible through this store. Sony states that previously purchased content will remain available for redownload "for the foreseeable future"; this wording is not a guarantee of permanent availability. Purchases must be funded from a compatible device or wallet method, because adding funds directly on PS3/Vita has not been accepted since 2021. As dates and arrangements may change, consult the official notice before making a purchase.

Jailbreaking: a separate decision

Jailbreaking and homebrew are separate topics from buying and playing official games. They can expose users to errors, account problems or security risks; they are not necessary to use a standard Vita. This guide does not recommend bypassing protections or obtaining games without authorization.

Our method and limitations

This update distinguishes documented features from general buying advice. We did not conduct a new hardware test for this revision. Check the condition of each individual unit and the regional availability of games before paying.

Quick checks before a second-hand purchase

  • Test both sticks, the buttons, triggers, touchscreen and rear touchpad in a compatible game.
  • Check the screen at several brightness levels, the charging port, Wi-Fi, cartridge reader and battery condition.
  • Ask for the model number shown on the back: PCH-1000 or PCH-2000. Confirm that the charger matches the model.
  • Fully power off the console before removing a memory card; Sony warns that removing one while the system is powered on can corrupt or result in lost data.
For digital purchases, wallet funds must be added using a supported method on the Web, a mobile device or a PS4/PS5; direct payment from the Vita is no longer available. Previously purchased content should remain downloadable for the foreseeable future, according to Sony, but this announcement does not guarantee permanent retention.
