PS Vita 1000, PS Vita Slim, or PS TV: Which Model Should You Choose?

By Filo · · 5 min read

Last checked: October 27, 2026. The three options often compared are not suited to the same use: the PCH-1000 and PCH-2000 are handheld consoles, while the PlayStation TV connects to a television and supports only a selection of Vita games. Here are the practical differences to check before buying used.

PS Vita PCH-1000: OLED screen

The first model is generally associated with its OLED screen and proprietary charging connector. The screen may be a selling point if you like its look, but the condition and age of the individual unit matter more than the spec sheet: check for screen markings, brightness, dead pixels, battery life and the condition of the port. The exact equipment may vary depending on the region and production batch.

PS Vita PCH-2000: Slim

The Slim is lighter and thinner, uses an LCD screen and has a micro-USB port. It also has limited internal memory for certain uses, but this does not necessarily replace a memory card for a large library. It is often better suited to carrying around or charging with a commonly available compatible cable. Check that the battery holds a charge and that the sticks do not suffer from drift.

PlayStation TV: Playing on a television

The PlayStation TV is a micro-console that lets you play certain Vita software on an external screen with a compatible controller. Not every game works: compatibility and control requirements can be significant limitations. It is therefore not a universal substitute for a handheld console. Check the model, accessories and compatibility of each title you want before buying.

Comparison table

Model Use Distinctive feature What to check
PCH-1000 Handheld OLED screen, proprietary cable Screen, battery, connector
PCH-2000 Handheld Lighter, LCD, micro-USB Sticks, battery, USB port
PlayStation TV Television Limited Vita compatibility Game list, controller, cables

Which model should you choose?

  • For playing on the go: compare the PCH-1000 and PCH-2000 based on the screen, comfort and actual condition.
  • For playing on a television: consider the PlayStation TV only if your games are among the compatible titles.
  • For a first purchase: choose the unit in the best condition, with verified accessories and a reasonable total price.

Factor proprietary memory cards, the charger and the games into your calculation. Missing accessories can wipe out the advantage of a low advertised price.

An important point about digital purchases

Sony has announced the closure of the PS Vita Store in July 2027. Digital purchases will no longer be possible through that store. Sony says that previously purchased content will remain available for redownload "for the foreseeable future"; this wording does not guarantee an unlimited period. Cartridges remain a way to obtain physical games, but some updates or expansions depend on downloads.

Example of cross-platform compatibility

Toukiden 2 illustrates why it is important to check the exact version: the announcement at the time mentioned Vita, PS4 and PC. Features may vary depending on the platform.

Documented specifications and compatibility

Sony lists a 5-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 960 × 544 pixels for the PCH-1000. For the PCH-2000, Sony announced a 5-inch LCD screen, a console approximately 20% thinner and 15% lighter, as well as 1 GB of internal memory. The space actually available is lower than the nominal capacity. Dimensions and accessories may differ between regional variants; check the exact model number on the back of the machine.

The PS TV uses HDMI output and a DualShock 3 or DualShock 4 controller. It supports only a selection of Vita games: titles that use the touchscreen, rear touchpad, camera or sensors may be incompatible or lose certain features. Compatibility lists may vary by region; check the exact title before buying. For a used console, also test the HDMI output, controller and memory card.
