Star Wars Battlefront

Want more? Did the second teaser for Star Wars Episode VII whet your appetite? Rejoice: as if by coincidence, Electronic Arts took advantage of the convention dedicated to George Lucas's trilogy in Anaheim to unveil the first proper trailer for Star Wars Battlefront. This major reboot of the sub-series, after ten years of silence, will arrive one month before the release of the new film, on November 19, on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Hyperrealism and hyperspace...

Presented as a fledgling game at E3 2013, then shown in a little more detail through a few brief previews at E3 2014, Battlefront is now pulling out all the stops with prerendered scenes taken from the game that look as though they came straight from a film. In June 2014, the teams at DICE, the studio handling development, emphasized that they had visited various filming locations from the original trilogy. This allowed them to use a technology called photogrammetry, which creates a 3D render directly from a set of photographs, resulting in a hyperrealistic look. It is in this environment, alongside characters that look more real than ever, that players will fight from either a first- or third-person perspective (FPS or TPS). They will be able to play story-based missions alone or in cooperation (online). Multiplayer will obviously remain a major focus, with matches supporting up to 40 players—the expertise DICE has in this area is undeniable, given the quality of the Battlefield games in this field.

A refresher before Episode VII

We now know that the game will take place during the original trilogy, consisting of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. This timeline will allow players to take on the roles of both Darth Vader and Boba Fett... Electronic Arts will also offer free additional downloadable content (DLC). It will create a narrative bridge to the new film by allowing players to experience the Battle of Jakku. This is the name of the desert planet seen in the first two Episode VII trailers, where a graveyard of warships can be seen... The battle takes place approximately ten years before the events described in The Force Awakens. People who pre-order Star Wars Battlefront will gain access to this DLC on December 1. Everyone else will have to wait until December 8. Still in time to play it before heading to the cinema to see Episode VII. We should have the opportunity to learn more at E3, which will take place in Los Angeles next June. We will be there, if the Force is with us.
