Sisyphus of Sagittarius — a Gold Saint with a tragic fate

The Lost Canvas

Sisyphus (or Sisyphos) of Sagittarius is a Gold Saint from Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. He is notably introduced as the half-brother of Leo Ilias and the uncle of Regulus. His major role in The Lost Canvas includes escorting Sasha to the Sanctuary, taking part in the investigation into Hypnos & Thanatos, and fighting the Dream Gods. During Hades’ invasion of the Sanctuary, Sisyphus fires a golden arrow directly at Hades — but it is sent back and pierces him, leaving him in a coma.  His Cosmo is sealed by Hypnos and Thanatos, and his soul is trapped in the Dream World. After surviving this fate, he is rescued by Sasha and returns to the fight: he fires an arrow from the Pope’s temple, which is intercepted and split into four by El Cid, but ultimately pierces the weak points of the dream god Oneiros. Hakurei then tasks him with leading Athena’s army in the Pope’s absence. In the final confrontation, Sisyphus faces Garuda Aiacos to protect the Ship of Hope. In one of the most dramatic moments, he puts out his own eyes to awaken his other senses and reach the Eighth Sense, allowing him to repel Aiacos and defeat him with a concentrated cosmic attack. After breaking through the barrier of the Lost Canvas alongside Regulus and Shion, he succumbs to his wounds, remaining faithful to his devotion to Sasha/Athena. (saintseiya.fandom.com)

Characteristics & techniques

  • Sisyphus wears the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius, the same constellation as Aiolos in the main timeline.
  • Among his best-known techniques are:
    • Chiron’s Light Impulse (光の衝撃) — a burst of light that pushes the opponent back through the pressure of Cosmo.
    • Light Arrows — cosmic arrows made of pure energy, which Sisyphus often uses to counter attacks or create long-range projectiles.
    • Chiron’s Dark Impulse / Chiron’s Sierra — less-documented techniques that are nevertheless part of his cosmic arsenal.

Sisyphus in Saint Seiya Awakening: Knights of the Zodiac (KOTZ)

As for KOTZ / Awakening, Sagittarius Sisyphus appeared as a playable unit through a limited summon (gacha): videos show that he has AOE (area-of-effect) skills and can generate a shield. For example, in a PvP test, he is shown providing a shield and dealing damage while modifying an opponent’s speed (-10% speed for 0 energy). However, he is not part of the permanent Advanced Summon — his availability is limited to the summoning event. (See the update text.) In addition, the game’s promotional videos show Sagittarius Sisyphus in “Sacred Duel” or “All Out Gacha” battles, with support abilities (shield) combined with attacks.

Meaning and place in the Saint Seiya universe

Sisyphus is both a tragic and noble character: his story combines personal guilt (he believes he caused the conflict by sending Alone/Sasha away), extreme sacrifice (blinding himself), and unwavering loyalty to Athena. In the generational line of the Sagittarians, he is sometimes presented as the Sagittarius of the 18th-century era (in the Lost Canvas universe), while Aiolos is the Sagittarius of the “modern” era in the main timeline. Sisyphus is a bridge between the eras and myths of the Sanctuary, embodying wisdom and duty, but also doubt — making him a fan favorite, particularly in Reddit discussions where he is described as a “central character, a symbol of virtue but with uncertainties”.
