Persona 4 Revival is indeed a remake of Persona 4 Golden
ATLUS now states this unambiguously on the official website: Persona 4 Revival is the remake of Persona 4 Golden, the enhanced version of Persona 4 originally released on PlayStation Vita in 2012 before being ported to modern platforms.
This is an important clarification. When the game was first announced, some players could still wonder whether ATLUS would rebuild only the 2008 PS2 game or also bring over Golden's content. Current communications explicitly present Golden as the foundation.
The presence of Marie, a character associated with Persona 4 Golden, points in the same direction. Game.fr also covered an additional sequence featuring Marie at the Tokyo Game Show 2026, separate from the public demo shown at the event.

Inaba has been completely rebuilt
The visual comparison is one of the easiest changes to measure. ATLUS itself has published images comparing Persona 4 Revival with Persona 4 Golden.
Inaba's overall structure remains recognizable, but the town gains density, lighting, vegetation, characters and environmental detail. ATLUS particularly highlights the blue skies, sunlit rivers and wet roads in the rain.

The change is therefore not based solely on resolution. The remake alters the geometry, lighting and presence of the town while seeking to preserve the feeling of a small rural Japanese community, where the same locations gradually become familiar to the player.
Turn-based combat remains, but becomes much more tactical
The foundation of Persona 4 remains: exploiting an enemy's weakness knocks it down and grants an extra action, while a group of downed opponents opens the way to an All-Out Attack.
Revival nevertheless adds several mechanics that bring its pace closer to more recent Persona games without simply copying how they work.
Guarding: blocking at the right time can stun a Shadow
The defense command becomes more active. ATLUS says that correctly blocking an attack can stun the Shadow. This turns guarding into a tactical tool rather than merely a way to reduce damage.
While exploring, it is also possible to gain the advantage by striking an enemy before combat, or instead avoid certain encounters.
Status ailments can spread between enemies
Another new feature: when a Shadow is already suffering from a status ailment, certain attacks can throw it into another enemy. The second opponent takes damage and may receive the same ailment.
This mechanic gives negative statuses greater importance, turning them into potential group-control tools rather than simple individual penalties.
Baton Pass arrives in Persona 4 Revival
When a character earns a 1 More, they can pass their extra action to another party member. This Baton Pass makes it possible to chain weaknesses and bring down several enemies with a well-organized team.
Prime Time: the biggest new combat mechanic
By fighting, the player fills a Prime Time gauge. Once activated, this mechanic allows several actions to be chained together and skills to be used without their usual cost during the sequence.
ATLUS also specifies that Prime Time temporarily allows players to ignore certain enemy resistances and freely use Baton Passes. The sequence can culminate in a Series Finale that deals heavy damage.

Social Links return and have a greater impact on combat
Social Links remain a central part of life in Inaba. The protagonist can build relationships with different people, strengthen those bonds and improve abilities connected to Personas.
The important new detail is that ATLUS now says these relationships can also unlock new skills usable in combat.
The remake therefore retains the principle that defines Persona 4: daily-life progression is not separate from the RPG. Relationships, social stats and time spent with residents directly improve the protagonist's progress.
New scenes: ATLUS adds content to the year spent in Inaba
ATLUS promises new seasonal events and more moments with the characters. This content is particularly important for a remake of Golden, because the game's appeal is not based solely on its investigation and dungeons: much of its identity comes from the school year spent with the group.

The studio also says that the main story has been re-recorded and that voice acting has been added to Social Links and many new events.
Local Tours with Aika Nakamura offer a new way to explore Inaba
Persona 4 Revival also introduces Local Tours. The player travels around Inaba with Aika Nakamura to find photographs connected to the past.
These photos can then be shown to the protagonist's friends to unlock special scenes offering insight into their stories.
This mechanic fits well with the philosophy explained by general producer Kazuhisa Wada: the team is not simply trying to remake Persona 4, but to bring the experience of an entire year in Inaba back to life for new players and those already familiar with the original.
School life: the calendar, activities and social stats are still here
Outside the Midnight Channel, the player continues to live as a high school student. ATLUS notably confirms:
studying;
club activities;
part-time jobs;
outings and activities with friends;
dates;
the social stats Knowledge, Courage, Diligence, Understanding and Expression.
Time remains a resource. An activity advances the day, and events still depend on the date, time and weather. ATLUS also says that the adventure will later allow players to leave Inaba for certain activities.

The story remains faithful to Persona 4 Golden
ATLUS says that Persona 4 Revival remains faithful to the original story.
The protagonist arrives in the small rural town of Inaba, where a series of unusual murders coincides with rumors surrounding the Midnight Channel. Together with his classmates, he forms the Investigation Team and discovers a hidden world behind television screens, populated by Shadows.
The characters must confront the parts of themselves they refuse to accept in order to awaken their Personas. ATLUS has not announced a complete rewrite of this storyline, but the new scenes and additional events mean that the experience will not be identical to Golden scene for scene.
Marie is present in Persona 4 Revival
The presence of Marie is now official. She appears among the other characters on the ATLUS/SEGA website and was featured in an additional sequence during the Tokyo Game Show 2026.
This confirmation is important because it strengthens the connection between Revival and the content of Persona 4 Golden.
To review the presentation shown in Japan in detail, our TGS 2026 Day 3 feature details the sequence with Marie without duplicating the entire event coverage here.
Pathfinder: an optional aid presented at PAX West
At PAX West 2026, ATLUS presented an aid called Pathfinder. Its purpose is to help players identify which direction to follow in dungeons.
This feature is part of the effort to improve ease of use without removing the classic systems. To preserve a distinct SEO purpose, our main article does not reproduce the entire panel: details of the presentation are available in our PAX West 2026 recap from September 5.
A new soundtrack with Ryota Kozuka and Shiori Sasaki
The music in Persona 4 Revival is not simply reusing the old audio files. ATLUS confirms Ryota Kozuka, a member of the ATLUS Sound Team, as the remake's composer.
Shiori Sasaki becomes the project's new lead vocalist. The soundtrack combines remixes of classic tracks with new compositions.
This choice allows the remake to retain the pop and acid-jazz identity associated with Persona 4 while featuring tracks specifically designed for the new scenes and presentation.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version is officially scheduled for May 20, 2027, approximately three months after the February 18 release on Xbox, PC and PS5.
ATLUS and SEGA have not provided a detailed technical reason for this delay. It would therefore be incorrect to attribute it to optimization, cartridge production or a temporary exclusivity deal without an official statement.
SEGA confirmed this version in a dedicated video published on September 9, 2026.

What ATLUS has not fully detailed yet
Despite the extensive information already available, several important points still need to be confirmed before release:
the complete list of all scenes added or changed compared with Golden;
precise performance details on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2;
the final PC specifications;
the exact differences between console versions;
all Social Links that may have been changed or expanded;

any additional post-launch content.
Does Persona 4 Revival replace Persona 4 Golden?
Not necessarily. Revival uses Golden as its foundation, but changes combat, the interface, visuals, voice acting and several events enough to become a different interpretation.
Persona 4 Golden will retain its historical value by showing how the game was designed before this reconstruction. For new players, Revival instead aims to offer a modernized entry point that is closer to the series' current standards.
General producer Kazuhisa Wada explains that the word “Revival” was chosen because the goal is not simply to remake Persona 4, but to bring the experience itself back to life for a new generation while giving returning players the feeling of rediscovering Inaba.
