CONTROL Resonant: Release Date, Gameplay and Control’s Legacy

The sequel puts Dylan Faden at the heart of a Manhattan warped by the Hiss, the Mold and a new resonance, while Jesse has disappeared. Why Control redefined Remedy’s identity

Control gave Remedy an immediately recognizable visual and narrative language. Released in 2019, the game did not invent the Finnish studio’s taste for strange stories: Max Payne, Alan Wake and Quantum Break had already mixed action, cinematic presentation and breaks in reality. However, it brought these obsessions together in a franchise that Remedy now owns outright.

The Oldest House is much more than a setting

The headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control is a brutalist building whose corridors, offices and monumental spaces shift around. Rooms do not always obey the same physical laws, and some areas only become accessible after acquiring a power. The environment therefore sets the pace of exploration and directly contributes to the story.

This idea remains central to CONTROL Resonant, but it is reversed. Jesse entered a fortress cut off from the world; Dylan must leave it while instability has spread through Manhattan. The city is therefore not merely a change of scenery: it tests what happens when anomalies once held in check contaminate an inhabited space.

A bureaucracy confronted with the inexplicable

The FBC, its censored files, absurd procedures and research videos allowed Control to treat the paranormal as an administrative problem. Objects of Power, Altered World Events, the Hiss and the Astral Plane have precise terminology without being fully explained. This contrast between institutional language and cosmic horror produces much of the series’ identity.

Optional documents are not merely collectibles. They offer a second reading of the world, reveal the Bureau’s failures and force players to connect the clues themselves. CONTROL Resonant promises to retain secrets, optional events and altered objects across its different areas. Environmental storytelling therefore remains a major part of its legacy, even if the setting is larger.

From Control to the Remedy Connected Universe

Control is one of the two pillars of the Remedy Connected Universe, alongside Alan Wake. The AWE expansion made the link to Bright Falls explicit: this was no longer just an Easter egg, but a meeting between phenomena and organizations belonging to the same narrative framework.

Remedy nevertheless presents Control and Alan Wake as standalone franchises. This distinction prevents every game from being reduced to a mandatory chapter in a single saga. A new player should be able to understand Dylan’s journey without knowing every FBC case; an attentive player, meanwhile, will spot concepts that circulate between the works.

Alan Wake 2 extended this approach through its mix of media, unstable realities and documents open to interpretation. CONTROL Resonant therefore should not simply answer Control’s questions: it may also change how we understand the RCU. The challenge will be preserving the strangeness without turning the mysteries into a simple list of references.

This continuity also explains the interest surrounding FBC: Firebreak. Remedy has confirmed that the spin-off covers a period during the containment of the Oldest House and, in its own way, sets up the events of Resonant. The official Firebreak FAQ refers to six years of containment: an important marker between the 2019 crisis and the Manhattan catastrophe.

CONTROL Resonant: what has been officially confirmed

Dylan leaves the Oldest House to find Jesse and contain a crisis warping Manhattan. Remedy has confirmed the release date, platforms, starting situation and several systems, while keeping the true nature of the threat secret.

Dylan becomes the protagonist

In Control, Jesse entered the Bureau to find her brother. The sequel reverses this dynamic: Dylan, long treated as a research subject and prisoner, is sent into the field. This allows players to see the FBC from the perspective of a man it held for years, rather than through the eyes of its Director.

Jesse remains essential. Remedy says she is missing when the new crisis begins and Dylan sets out to find her. An Xbox Wire hands-on report covering the opening describes a scene in which Jesse appears to pass the Aberrant to him before he wakes up. This is a sequence shown to the press, not yet a complete explanation of her disappearance.

Manhattan is divided into large areas

Remedy describes this as its largest game, but rejects the model of a map filled with repetitive activities. Districts are divided into distinct areas connected by FBC control points. Dylan’s abilities, keys, access cards and the trust earned from certain characters gradually open new routes.

Two quest categories structure the adventure: Dylan’s main journey and standalone World Quests. They are joined by combat, secrets, environmental challenges and altered objects. Zoe De Vera, an FBC field agent, serves as Dylan’s contact. A seamless dialogue system allows conversations to continue during exploration.

Remedy provided these details in its presentation on combat, builds and choices, later expanding on them during the interview published by Epic Games Store at Gamescom 2026. Our Gamescom 2026 guide brings together the event’s context and main announcements.

Worldwide digital release on September 24

CONTROL Resonant is scheduled to launch digitally on September 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Physical PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions are announced for October 15, 2026. A Mac version via Steam and the App Store is due later in 2026. Remedy is also announcing GeForce NOW support and pre-order bonuses. On Xbox, the game supports Play Anywhere: a compatible purchase provides access to the console and PC versions with shared saves, content and achievements.

The game will make one final major public appearance just before launch: Remedy has announced a playable PS5 demo of CONTROL Resonant at Tokyo Game Show 2026, held from September 17 to 21. It will be installed at the Sega/Atlus booth in Hall 4 (04-N01). This presence is confirmed by Remedy Entertainment’s Japanese press release. Our Tokyo Game Show 2026 guide details public days, French times, tickets and access to Makuhari Messe.

The release makes CONTROL Resonant one of the key entries in our selection of September 2026 video game releases. The Digital Deluxe Edition listed on the PlayStation Store notably adds 48-hour early access, an outfit, an artifact, resources, an artbook and a digital soundtrack.

Gameplay: the Aberrant, builds and Assist Mode

The biggest change is clear: Dylan does not use a firearm and must maintain pressure at close range. Remedy replaces the Service Weapon with the Aberrant, a weapon linked to the Board that can take several forms, including a hammer, dual blades, a scythe and fists.

Combat built around momentum

Melee attacks restore an ability resource, powers can stagger enemies and executions temporarily increase close-range damage. This loop encourages aggression, reading attacks and managing positioning. Environmental powers have not disappeared: Dylan can still turn the surroundings into a weapon and, depending on his build, summon tools such as Mold turrets.

The Aberrant’s main and secondary forms, combo finishers, talents and paranormal abilities allow players to specialize Dylan. The Gap, a space linked to his psyche, is used to shape his equipment. Resonants are major bosses: defeating them unlocks an ability, sometimes alongside a choice that temporarily closes off other options.

Different routes and a New Game Plus

Not everything can be obtained in a first playthrough. New Game Plus retains much of the Aberrant’s upgrades, health, combat abilities, talents and artifacts. Powers required for exploration remain tied to narrative progression. This second playthrough also adds talent nodes, ability combinations and a fourth artifact slot.

Remedy explains this approach in detail in its official New Game Plus presentation. The promise of replayability based on different specializations is credible on paper; its actual balance can only be assessed after a full review.

A highly adjustable Assist Mode

Melee combat introduces a new learning curve. Remedy responds with an Assist Mode that can be activated at any time. It allows players to adjust enemy aggression, the perfect-dodge window, projectile speed, damage received or dealt, power recovery and melee attack magnetism separately.

Options such as invincibility, one-hit kills and instant posture breaks allow players to prioritize the story. Conversely, some settings can increase the difficulty. Remedy specifies that no trophy or achievement is blocked by these assists. This recent information comes from Remedy’s gameplay lead on the PlayStation Blog.

The risky choice: moving on from Jesse and ranged weapons

CONTROL Resonant does more than expand Control: it replaces two elements players immediately associated with the series. Jesse is no longer the playable character, and the Service Weapon gives way to a system without ranged weapons. This break is the main point to watch before release.

Why the change could work

Dylan is not a hero external to the story. His confinement, relationship with Jesse and exposure to paranormal forces were present from the first game. Giving him the lead role could show the FBC’s practices from a more critical angle. Close-quarters combat also distinguishes his violence from Jesse’s cooler precision and makes his story visible through the mechanics.

Hands-on sessions show a weapon capable of varying its range, speed and power. The return of powers, thrown objects and environmental destruction maintains a connection with Control. Narratively, Remedy says Jesse still plays an important role and that players will learn more about the Faden siblings’ shared past.

Why the gamble could disappoint

The Service Weapon, telekinesis and levitation formed an exceptionally readable trio. Enforcing close range may make fights more demanding, more visually cluttered and less free for players who preferred controlling distance. Varied builds do not automatically guarantee that every form of the Aberrant will feel equally satisfying.

The move from the Oldest House to large districts raises another question: will the larger scale gain spectacle at the cost of density? Remedy promises handcrafted areas and rejects the filler of a traditional open world. We will need to assess the variety of World Quests, how often players return to the same sectors and the quality of the optional documents.

Our pre-review position: this change is coherent with Dylan, but represents a genuine risk. Assist Mode reduces accessibility barriers; it does not yet allow us to judge the precision of impacts, the camera, the readability of enemy groups or the depth of builds over several dozen hours.

Jesse, Polaris and the theory of a resonance war

Remedy has confirmed the pieces of the mystery, but not yet how they fit together. Jesse is missing, containment has failed, the Hiss and Mold have reached Manhattan, a new resonance is affecting the city and formerly powerful individuals have become Resonants.

Confirmed: Dylan is searching for Jesse; the Aberrant is linked to the Board; Resonants were once highly powerful people; a cosmic force is altering reality.

Still unknown: the exact cause of Jesse’s disappearance, the origin of the new resonance, Polaris’s current role and the precise event that broke containment.

Why did Jesse pass on the Aberrant?

Creative director Mikael Kasurinen describes the Aberrant as an expression of the Board granted to Dylan, rather than a natural part of him. The decisive question is therefore no longer only where the weapon came from: we must understand why Jesse appears to have allowed this connection.

The Board helped Jesse in Control, but its interests did not always align with those of the FBC. The Foundation expansion reinforced this ambiguity. A weapon can become a channel for communication and influence. Game.fr analysis: Jesse may have given Dylan the only tool capable of resisting the crisis, while accepting a price her brother does not yet know about.

The silence surrounding Polaris

Polaris helped Jesse resist the Hiss since the events at Ordinary. Hedron’s destruction did not erase that presence. Yet the pre-launch communication discusses the Hiss, the new resonance, a cosmic force and Jesse’s disappearance without clarifying Polaris’s role.

This absence proves nothing. It nevertheless becomes significant because CONTROL Resonant places resonance conflicts at the center of both its title and progression. If Polaris remains linked to Jesse, her situation could explain why the Director disappeared or why the Hiss breached the Oldest House’s boundaries.

The missing link after Firebreak

In Control, the FBC attempts to hold the Hiss inside. Six years later, Firebreak still takes place during containment. At the beginning of Resonant, Dylan instead discovers an overrun city. A decisive event is missing between these two situations: the moment when the paranormal prison stopped working.

Remedy has not attributed this failure to the Hiss, Jesse, the Board or the new cosmic force. Presenting one cause as certain would be misleading. The official link between Firebreak and Resonant nevertheless indicates that the spin-off is not a consequence-free side story.

Game.fr analysis: several forces rather than a new invader

A sequence described by Xbox Wire shows a Resonant eliminating Hiss. If this opposition is confirmed, the new resonance would not be a simple evolution of the Hiss. Control already placed the Hiss’s influence against the protection associated with Hedron or Polaris; Resonant adds the Board, the Aberrant, transformed former individuals and a cosmic power that alters Manhattan.

Our theory: the title could refer both to the bosses Dylan defeats and to a broader conflict between several forces capable of acting on reality through resonance. Polaris, the Hiss, the Board and the cosmic entity are not officially presented as four factions in the same war. This is an interpretive framework, not a revelation.

Why Control has become strategic for Remedy

CONTROL Resonant is both a creative sequel and a test of Remedy’s new business model. In February 2024, the studio bought back from 505 Games the rights to Control, the project then called Control 2, Codename Condor—later FBC: Firebreak—and future products in the franchise. The maximum announced amount was approximately €17 million.

This transaction gives Remedy greater control over publishing and long-term revenue. The company considers Control and Alan Wake its main owned franchises, with each capable of supporting several experiences while feeding the Remedy Connected Universe.

Self-publishing and the Annapurna partnership

Remedy is publishing CONTROL Resonant itself. The agreement announced with Annapurna in August 2024 provides for 50% of the project’s development budget to be financed by Annapurna while leaving Remedy in control of the game. Annapurna also has options to adapt the worlds of Control and Alan Wake for film and television.

This structure raises the commercial stakes. The studio must prove that it can turn a well-regarded but demanding license into a global franchise without smoothing away what makes it distinctive. The €59.99 price, multiplatform launch, Mac version and accessibility options broaden the potential audience; the move to melee combat and the change of hero could, however, unsettle some fans.

The official financial documents detail the acquisition of the Control rights and the partnership between Remedy and Annapurna.

What CONTROL Resonant needs to achieve

The first Control demonstrated that the strange could be systemic: the architecture, powers and documents all told the same unsettling story. Resonant must recover that coherence on a different scale. Manhattan cannot simply be larger; its areas must produce the same sense of discovery while retaining sufficient narrative density.

The change in viewpoint must also serve the themes. Dylan is a character shaped by confinement and distrust. If his relationships, dialogue and progression choices genuinely convey his struggle to preserve his humanity, the action RPG can extend Control without imitating it. Otherwise, the new systems risk appearing to be a mechanical substitute.
