Rayman Legends Retold vs Rayman Legends: all the differences

By Filo · · 19 min read
Updated October 4, 2026: Rayman Legends Retold is now scheduled for December 3, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The original October 1 date announced in June has therefore been delayed. Ubisoft also released a new overview video on September 22 showing the reimagining of Rayman Legends in greater detail, including its brand-new sixth kingdom, dragon rides, new musical levels and fully voiced cutscenes. Quick answer: Rayman Legends Retold is not simply an HD remaster of the 2013 Rayman Legends. Ubisoft describes it as a reimagining: a selection of iconic levels returns with new 3D visuals, while a new story, a sixth kingdom, four brand-new musical levels, dragon-riding sequences, Cave of Trials challenges and a greatly expanded version of Kung Foot complete the adventure. The standard edition also includes Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition.

Is Rayman Legends Retold a remake or a remaster?

The most accurate term is “reimagining”. Ubisoft itself uses the English word reimagining. The distinction matters: Retold does more than simply increase the resolution or frame rate of the 2013 game. The project keeps the core of Rayman Legends — fast platforming, Lums, Teensies, musical levels and local co-op — but rebuilds the presentation, rewrites part of the story and adds new content. Ubisoft has confirmed a new plot, fully voiced cutscenes, a sixth kingdom, four additional musical levels, dragon rides and new challenges. However, misleading wording should be avoided: Ubisoft speaks of a large selection of iconic levels returning, not officially of a complete recreation of every level from 2013's Rayman Legends. Retold should therefore be seen as a new interpretation of the original game rather than an identical modernized copy. This distinction echoes other Ubisoft franchise revivals where the line between remake, remaster and reimagining deserves clarification, as in our verdict on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake.

From stylized 2D to a more dynamic 3D presentation

The visual overhaul is the most immediately noticeable difference. Rayman Legends relied on a strongly stylized 2D art direction, while Retold gives more volume to its characters and environments. The game nevertheless remains a side-scrolling platformer. The goal is not to turn Rayman into a free-roaming 3D platformer in the style of Mario Odyssey. Instead, Ubisoft uses depth, camera movement and perspective changes to make scenes more spectacular without sacrificing the precision of a lateral platforming course. In its official presentation, Ubisoft notably describes a camera that can tilt and a play area that can change perspective to break away from the feeling of a simple 2D plane. This is especially visible during chases, boss fights and the new dragon rides.

A new story, but the Legends heroes are still here

Rayman is not returning alone. Ubisoft confirms the presence of Globox, Barbara, Grand Minimus and Murphy. Their new adventure begins when a mysterious antagonist spreads corruption across the Glade of Dreams. This time, Ubisoft wants to give more room to storytelling. The cutscenes are fully voiced and the studio promises new interactions between the characters. The new story should also make it easier to connect the different parts of Rayman's universe. This change does not mean Retold becomes a narrative-driven game: at its core it remains a fast platforming adventure where players jump, glide, hit enemies, collect Lums and free Teensies. The story mainly serves to create stronger continuity between worlds and gameplay sequences.

A brand-new sixth kingdom joins the iconic levels

Ubisoft confirms that Rayman Legends Retold is not limited to rebuilding old levels. A completely new area, presented as a mysterious sixth kingdom, joins the adventure. The important point for players already familiar with Legends is Ubisoft's wording: the game will offer a large selection of iconic levels alongside this new kingdom. At this stage, the publisher has not released a final list allowing us to say that every level from the 2013 game returns unchanged. This is therefore one of the things we will be watching before release: how many historic levels are retained, which ones are deeply rebuilt and how much space the sixth kingdom actually occupies in the overall adventure.

Dragon rides change the pace of the levels

Among the most visible additions are the Dragon Rides. Rayman and his companions can ride dragons in sequences where movement and camera work move further away from the classic side-scrolling platform format. Ubisoft presents them as genuine gameplay sequences rather than simple cinematic transitions. The studio even included a dragon ride in the twenty-minute demo offered at Gamescom 2026.

Four new musical levels are confirmed

The musical levels were among the most memorable sequences in Rayman Legends. Retold keeps the concept and adds four entirely new musical levels. The principle remains the same: jumps, attacks and movement are synchronized with the music to create a sequence that almost plays like an interactive song. Ubisoft has not yet published the full list of the four new tracks. The soundtrack itself is also being expanded. Christophe Héral and Grant Kirkhope are contributing new compositions alongside themes already associated with the Rayman universe.

The Cave of Trials adds new challenges

Ubisoft has also announced the Cave of Trials, a series of new challenges designed to test the player's skills. The publisher has not yet detailed its full structure, rewards or length. It should therefore not be presented as a fully separate mode until its exact operation has been documented. What is officially known is that it forms part of Retold's new gameplay content.

Kung Foot Evo: much more than a simple return of the mini-game

Kung Foot is back, but Ubisoft has changed it enough to call the new version Kung Foot Evo. In the 2013 game, the concept mainly revolved around very simple and deliberately chaotic matches where players hit both the ball and their opponents. The new version aims to preserve that immediacy while adding more control and team play.
The main new features announced for Kung Foot Evo.
New feature What changes
Ball control Players can carry and control the ball more directly.
Passing A direct passing system between teammates is added.
Pitches Arenas become larger and more vertical.
Team play The design is more focused on 2-versus-2 matches.
Power-ups Power-ups can temporarily change match conditions.
Rules Victory conditions, score, ball type and friendly fire can be customized.
Progression New options are gradually unlocked by playing.
This change is interesting because it addresses a limitation of the old Kung Foot: the mode was very effective for a few quick matches, but offered few tools for building real team strategy. Passing, verticality and greater ball control should make matches easier to read without removing their chaotic side.

Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition is included in the standard edition

This is one of the biggest additions in terms of content: buying the standard edition of Rayman Legends Retold also includes Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition. This is not just the “Back to Origins” levels that were once included in Legends. Ubisoft is bringing back Rayman Origins in full with several technical and quality-of-life improvements.
The improvements announced for Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition.
Element Announced improvement
Image quality 4K resolution / textures and a modernized presentation depending on the platform
Frame rate 60 frames per second announced
Relics Return of relics previously available on PS Vita
Mosaic gallery Relics unlock videos about Rayman and Globox
Costumes 18 new skins, for an announced total of 34
Standees 50 new models added, bringing the total to 51
Quality of life Skip cutscenes, speed up level endings, toggle sprint and remap controls
Assists Murphy’s Assist, Fairy Blessing and additional protection hearts
For a player who has never discovered the two modern-era Rayman titles, the package therefore becomes particularly substantial: Retold reimagines Legends, while Origins: Enhanced Edition allows the 2011 adventure to be replayed in a modernized version.

Far more accessibility options

On September 23, Ubisoft detailed several accessibility features built into Rayman Legends Retold. They can be enabled or disabled individually, including in co-op. The announced options notably include:
  • Fairy Blessing, an optional assist offered after several failures at the same checkpoint;
  • the ability to highlight interactive elements, rewards, enemies or players;
  • an adjustable background behind the interface to improve readability;
  • several subtitle sizes and background opacity levels;
  • displaying the name of the person speaking;
  • control remapping on every platform;
  • the option to disable vibration and camera shake;
  • an alternative sans-serif font;
  • no mandatory QTEs;
  • separate audio settings for music, voices, ambience, effects and interface sounds.
These options do not change the game's structure, but they represent an important difference from the 2013 experience and show that Ubisoft has integrated more recent accessibility standards into this reimagining. The new official video finally shows Retold in more detail

The Game Overview Trailer released on September 22, 2026 is currently the most complete official presentation of the game. Ubisoft revisits the new story, sixth kingdom, dragon rides, co-op and the content that sets Retold apart from the 2013 game.
Official Ubisoft video released on September 22, 2026.

Why is the release date now set for December 3, 2026?

Rayman Legends Retold was originally announced for October 1, 2026 during the June State of Play. Ubisoft's most recent communications now indicate a release on December 3, 2026. To avoid confusion, this second date is therefore the one to remember. Some local pages or older announcements may still display October 1 because they have not all been updated at the same pace. As of October 4, 2026, the current date to use is indeed December 3, 2026.

What Rayman Legends Retold keeps from the original

Despite all these additions, Ubisoft emphasizes its desire to preserve what made Rayman Legends work. The game still revolves around several fundamentals:
  • fast and precise platforming;
  • Rayman's jumps, glides and attacks;
  • Lums to collect;
  • hidden Teensies to free;
  • musical levels;
  • bosses and chases;
  • local co-op for up to four players;
  • Kung Foot.
This is probably where Retold's success will be decided for players of the 2013 game: the new presentation needs to add more spectacle without breaking the readability and highly precise pacing that made the original so strong.

What we still do not know before release

Despite the new September video, several questions remain open.

The full list of returning levels

Ubisoft confirms the return of a large selection of iconic levels but has not yet published a complete list allowing the original content and Retold to be compared directly.

The exact size of the sixth kingdom

The new kingdom is confirmed, but its length, number of levels and importance to the story remain to be clarified.

Performance on each console version

The PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 versions are confirmed. However, the graphics modes, resolutions and frame rates specific to each version still need to be verified when the final technical information is released.

The total length of the adventure

The combination of revisited levels and new content should change the length compared with the 2013 game, but Ubisoft has not announced an official playtime.

All Kung Foot Evo power-ups

Power-ups are confirmed, but their complete list and all match modifiers still need to be detailed.

Do you need to have played Rayman Legends before Retold?

No. Ubisoft presents Retold precisely as a way to retell this adventure for a new generation of players. Players familiar with the 2013 game will nevertheless have an extra point of interest: recognizing the environments and levels that have been rebuilt, then comparing changes in pacing, presentation and level design. Conversely, starting directly with Retold does not require knowing the original story. And since Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition is included, newcomers will also be able to discover the other major modern platforming entry in the series.

Can Rayman Legends Retold completely replace the 2013 game?

It is still too early to say. Retold uses the foundations of Legends, but Ubisoft presents it as a reimagining rather than a perfectly identical restoration. The new 3D graphics, revised story, voiced cutscenes and sixth kingdom already give the project a different identity. Most importantly, Ubisoft talks about a selection of iconic levels returning. Until the final list is known, it would therefore be incorrect to claim that Retold contains absolutely everything from the 2013 game in modernized form. For players attached to the original 2D art direction, the older Rayman Legends will retain its own identity anyway. Retold should instead be seen as a new interpretation of the same foundation.

Key takeaways

Rayman Legends Retold builds on one of Ubisoft's most popular platformers, but its ambitions go beyond those of a conventional remaster. The project keeps side-scrolling gameplay, co-op, Lums, Teensies and musical levels while rebuilding their presentation and adding enough content to create a different experience. The main new features are now clearly identified: new story, 3D graphics, voiced cutscenes, sixth kingdom, four new musical levels, dragon rides, Cave of Trials, Kung Foot Evo and Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition included. The big question before December 3 is therefore less “what changes?” than how far has Ubisoft transformed the 2013 levels without losing their precision and pacing? The definitive answer will come with the final version. Also read: our complete Gamescom 2026 guide, where Rayman Legends Retold was among the games shown.
