The story begins in a particularly bleak future. It is 1454, and the Dagdan Empire is on the brink of destruction following the rebirth of the demon god Balor. A direct confrontation appears impossible. The goddess Fortuna, who can act upon time, offers another possibility: return to the past and alter the destinies of several heroes so they can help save the future. Much of the adventure therefore takes the player back to 1449, five years earlier, when the capital Dagsion is hosting the Heroic Games. This competition, held in honor of Dagda, founder of the empire, brings together some of the continent's most formidable fighters. According to tradition, the winner can have one wish granted. The destinies of the four main heroes intersect around this promise.

Fortune's Weave does not revolve around a single protagonist. Its first major act follows four characters, each with their own story, allies and reasons for entering the Heroic Games.

Cai: saving his father

Cai is a young teenager from Ribeira. When his father is arrested and imprisoned in Dagsion, he decides to enter the Heroic Games in the hope of securing his release.

Dietrich: living for battle

Dietrich is a swordsman from another land. After washing ashore on Dagda following a shipwreck, he enters the Games in search of opponents capable of satisfying his thirst for battle.

Theodora: protecting Saramis

Theodora rules Saramis. She fights to defend her people's faith, the stability of her kingdom and to fulfill a wish long held by her nation.

Leda: finding her father's killer

Leda witnessed her father's murder by a mysterious assailant. When she learns that the culprit may be in Dagsion and taking part in the Games, she enters the competition as well, driven primarily by revenge. The developers also explain that family is one of the central themes of all four stories, even though each protagonist approaches it from a different angle.

Is Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave a sequel to Three Houses?

Dietrich attacks with his sword during a battle in Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave
Originally from Fódlan, Dietrich is one of the direct links between Fortune’s Weave and the world of Three Houses. © Nintendo / Intelligent Systems
Short answer: Fortune's Weave officially shares the same world as Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but Nintendo and Intelligent Systems ask players not to view it as a simple sequel.
The connection has now been clearly established by the developers. Dagda lies south of Fódlan, the continent where Fire Emblem: Three Houses takes place. Intelligent Systems nevertheless specifies that the region and time period are different. Fortune's Weave was designed to be understood and enjoyed without having played Three Houses. There are still direct connections between the two games. The developers have notably confirmed that some Three Houses characters appear in Fortune's Weave. Dietrich himself is presented as coming from Fódlan. The studio also chose to bring back Chinatsu Kurahana, who was already character designer on Three Houses, precisely because the two games belong to the same universe.

Does Fortune's Weave take place before or after Three Houses?

This is where caution is required. The developers confirm a different time period, but the official information available at launch does not allow the years used in Dagda to be directly converted to Fódlan's calendar. It would therefore be misleading to simply subtract the dates shown in both games and infer a definitive chronology from them. At this stage, the geographical connection is confirmed; the exact chronological position still needs to be documented more precisely.

How do Fortune's Weave tactical battles work?

Positioning, range and terrain determine the outcome of turn-based encounters. © Nintendo / Intelligent Systems
The core of Fire Emblem remains intact: the main battles use a turn-based strategy system on a grid. Before the encounter, the player selects the units they want to deploy. Once the battle begins, positioning, range, weapons, magic, class and terrain become decisive. Melee attacks exist alongside ranged weapons and magic, while certain abilities can dramatically alter a tactical situation.

Combat Arts

Combat Arts can trigger special attacks or effects in exchange for increased weapon durability consumption. They can provide greater power, improved range or other temporary advantages.

Blaze Arts and Blaze Gauge: a risk-reward system

Cai extends a glowing hand while using an ability in Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave
Cai unleashes a spectacular technique at the heart of the Blaze Arts risk-reward system. © Nintendo / Intelligent Systems
The four protagonists also have particularly powerful personal techniques called Blaze Arts, referred to as fiery abilities in Nintendo's French presentation. Unlike Combat Arts, activating them directly costs HP. Cai can, for example, unleash a flame attack covering a large area, while Dietrich has an ability that lets him reposition by teleporting across the battlefield. Each use gradually fills a Blaze Gauge. At half gauge, the character gains a power bonus. The system should not be overused, however: completely filling the gauge triggers a Burst state, ends the bonus and halves the affected hero's maximum HP.

How do Blaze Arts work?

  • They use HP.
  • They gradually fill the Blaze Gauge.
  • At half gauge, a bonus is activated.
  • A completely filled gauge triggers Burst.
  • Burst removes the bonus and halves maximum HP.
The developers also note that some enemies have comparable attacks, preventing players from simply pushing forward without analyzing the terrain.

Fortuna lets you rewind during battles

Time travel is not used only for the story. It also becomes a gameplay mechanic through Fortuna's blessing. The player can return to an earlier point in a battle to correct a mistake, rethink positioning or prevent the loss of a unit. The concept reflects one of the game's main themes: learning from what has already happened, trying again differently and then bringing those different experiences together into a shared progression.

What can you do in Dagsion between Heroic Games matches?

Fortune's Weave is not limited to a succession of tactical maps. Several days separate Heroic Games battles, and the player must decide how to use that time.

Training

The arena lets players arrange one additional training session each week to improve unit talents, learn new techniques and gain access to better weapons.

Scouting future opponents

On certain days, it is possible to watch other teams fight from the stands and gather information before facing them.

Buying and upgrading equipment

The shopping district lets players stock up on equipment and items before upcoming battles.

Receiving blessings

Dagsion's many temples also offer services associated with the gods of Dagda's world.

Changing class

The aptitude exam system lets units progress into other classes when they meet the required conditions.

Recruiting new allies

Many fighters in Dagsion can join the army. Some will agree quickly, while others require more effort. Gifts and meals can notably strengthen relationships.

Completing requests

Residents also offer side missions with rewards, sometimes with a time limit.

Dagda can be explored beyond its capital

The player can leave Dagsion and travel freely across the continent. The developers explain that they wanted to significantly strengthen the RPG and exploration aspects compared with previous entries. It is possible to visit different settlements, buy products unique to certain regions, gather information and improve allies' techniques while traveling. Exploration areas can also provide materials used to strengthen weapons as well as various treasures.

The return of dungeons

These encounters are called Clash Battles. They abandon the large tactical grid in favor of a system closer to a traditional turn-based RPG: each side acts in turn and must account for the opponent's strengths and weaknesses. Link Attacks let two units cooperate, while other combo possibilities enrich these faster battles. Nintendo Life confirms this terminology and clearly distinguishes Clash Battles from the main tactical battles.

Can you play the four stories in any order?

For privacy reasons YouTube needs your permission to be loaded. For more details, please see our Annonceurs & Partenariats Gaming sur Game.fr.

Yes. This is one of the points the developers wanted to clarify before release. The stories of Cai, Dietrich, Theodora and Leda are separate, but the player can freely switch between them outside battles from the White Raven's perch in Dagsion. It is therefore possible to follow one route almost to the end, regularly alternate between all four stories or progress according to the characters and events that interest you most. Nintendo states that there is no order considered correct. The developers specifically designed the game so an initial choice would not become an irreversible decision the player might regret. Some exploration elements already discovered on one route also become easier to access on the others.

How do the four routes converge?

Without revealing key events, Fortune's Weave follows three major parts rather than four completely separate campaigns.
  1. Part 1 — the heroes and the Heroic Games: the player follows Cai, Dietrich, Theodora or Leda, develops their team, recruits allies and discovers each protagonist's own story.
  2. Part 2 — the war: the story becomes more linear and demanding. The calendar and free movement across the map give way more often to a sequence of tactical battles.
  3. Part 3 — the final convergence: Eshmel brings together the heroes and progression from the different routes. The calendar and world map return with one major new feature: several squads can be sent simultaneously toward different objectives.
This three-act structure, described by Nintendo Life and ActuGaming, explains why the four routes function less like alternate endings and more like narrative threads intended to be woven together.

Do you have to replay all four routes entirely at normal speed?

Not necessarily. Notable Deeds progress across the entire save and award Karma Shards. These resources unlock the Boons of Salvation, global and optional bonuses that can notably increase experience gained, speed up class or weapon mastery and reduce certain blacksmith prices. New tiers become accessible after completing several Part 1 routes. RPG Site specifies that these bonuses apply to every route; ActuGaming also reports that after completing Part 2 once, subsequent versions can be replaced by a summary. The game therefore has several systems designed to accelerate later routes without removing their unique content.

Each hero also has their own activities

The developer interview reveals that the four routes differ in more than just their stories.
  • Cai can notably capture animals, bond with his mounts and make use of certain farmland.
  • Dietrich notably develops Combat Arts by fighting enemies.
  • Theodora can recruit soldiers in settlements and use them as battalions.
  • Leda can perform in taverns to earn rewards or information about secret locations.
This system was designed after the developers realized that an early version of the game risked making the four routes too similar in their activities.

Classes, recruitment and growth rates: an especially open progression system

Conversations, gifts and meals all contribute to recruiting the many allies available in Dagsion. © Nintendo / Intelligent Systems
Fortune's Weave brings back the certification exam concept from Three Houses. As long as a unit meets the necessary requirements, it can be directed toward different classes. The same character can therefore develop very differently depending on the player and the decisions made across the different routes.

Growth rates are now visible

This is an important change for optimization-focused players: for the first time in the series, Fortune's Weave directly displays character growth rates. This information helps players understand which stats, such as Strength or Speed, are more likely to increase when leveling up. This transparency is particularly useful for players who want to optimize classes and builds rather than relying only on external data.

One of Fire Emblem's largest recruitable casts

According to Intelligent Systems, Fortune's Weave also features one of the largest numbers of recruitable characters in the series. Each hero has their own group, but some characters can be recruited in Dagsion or even drawn away from groups tied to the other protagonists.

Ornius Rider, elephants and chariots: Dagda introduces new classes

This freedom of progression is accompanied by classes created specifically for the continent of Dagda. Among the examples revealed by Intelligent Systems is the Ornius Rider, a cavalry unit mounted on a creature resembling an ostrich. The developers also mention:
  • a class using a chariot inspired by antiquity;
  • an Elephant Rider fighting from the back of an elephant;
  • several combat styles directly inspired by Dagda's cultures and environments.

A weapon resembling a firearm

Another curiosity confirmed in the interview: one character uses a weapon resembling a firearm, a particularly unusual choice for Fire Emblem. Intelligent Systems does not want to explain its origin immediately and says its presence makes more sense as the story progresses. It is therefore best to avoid revealing more in a spoiler-free article.

Why does Fortune's Weave offer only one main save?

This is one of the new entry's most unusual design decisions. Fortune's Weave brings progression together in a single main save, because the four routes and the different versions of the same character are ultimately intended to converge. If a character is developed as a mage on one route and then as a physical fighter on another, the developers explain that the progress can later be combined. The principle does not apply only to the four heroes: it can also apply to characters recruited on several routes. This mechanic adds another layer of meaning to the title Fortune's Weave: what the player accomplishes across the different routes is gradually “woven” into shared progression.

Can you return to an earlier chapter?

Yes. To compensate for the lack of multiple traditional save files, the game keeps data at the start of each main chapter. It is therefore possible to return to certain points to replay a battle, revisit a map or watch certain scenes again. Intelligent Systems also says it designed the game to avoid permanently missable elements, with the goal of preventing players from feeling forced to restart immediately after every mistake.

Eshmel did not exist at first: why was this character added?

This is probably one of the most interesting revelations from the interview Nintendo published just before release. Eshmel did not exist in the original design of Fortune's Weave. The project was initially supposed to ask the player to choose one of the four heroes and then mainly follow that character's story through to its conclusion. But during development, director Toshiyuki Kusakihara felt that this structure did not sufficiently convey the sense that the four stories eventually came together. The team needed a character with a broader view of all four protagonists. That is how Eshmel was created when development was already approximately halfway complete. His addition also helped strengthen the time-travel element: Eshmel serves as a link between the ruined world of 1454 and the events of the Heroic Games five years earlier. This information helps explain why Fortune's Weave begins with Eshmel even though Cai, Dietrich, Theodora and Leda remain presented as the four major heroes of the adventure.

Fortune's Weave was originally planned with eight protagonists

Theodora prepares an attack with a heavy weapon in Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave
The project was refocused from eight protagonists to four in order to develop each of their journeys more fully. © Nintendo / Intelligent Systems
Even before Eshmel was added, the project was even more ambitious. Intelligent Systems explains that it looked for a way to go beyond the structure of Three Houses, which was built around three major perspectives. One of the early ideas was therefore to move from three to eight different protagonists. The team quickly realized, however, that eight separate stories risked multiplying the amount of information to follow and making the experience too complex. The concept was eventually refocused around the four characters Cai, Dietrich, Theodora and Leda. This decision partly explains the game's unusual structure: instead of routes designed to remain opposed, as in Three Houses, Fortune's Weave's four paths are designed to gradually converge toward a shared goal.

Joy-Con 2 let you play Fire Emblem with mouse controls

Fortune's Weave also introduces a first for the series: Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. This option lets players move units, browse the battlefield and quickly access tactical information with controls closer to those used on PC. Most importantly, the player can switch at any time between traditional button controls and mouse controls. It is therefore not a separate mode that requires restarting a game or manually changing the entire configuration. Its value will naturally depend on personal habits, but this option seems particularly well suited to a tactical RPG with many grids, menus and stat sheets.

A flamenco-inspired soundtrack that differs for each protagonist

Leda plays an instrument surrounded by purple energy in a Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave arena

The developers wanted to distinguish Dagda from Fódlan's atmosphere even through its music. While Three Houses drew visual inspiration from medieval and eastern Europe, Fortune's Weave embraces an atmosphere more evocative of Mediterranean antiquity. For the music, Toshiyuki Kusakihara notably mentions a flamenco influence, reinforced by percussion and handclaps intended to convey more energy. Each protagonist also has their own musical motif. These different themes were designed to gradually come together as the heroes' destinies converge, musically reproducing the game's central idea.

How long does it take to finish Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave?

There is no universal playtime, because the time required depends heavily on the number of routes followed, side activities, exploration and difficulty level. The first French reviews nevertheless give an idea of the game's scale.
  • Mainly one route: around 50 hours according to Jeuxvideo.com.
  • Much more complete playthrough: around 110 to 120 hours according to several French reviews.
  • Very thorough completion: some international reviews report even longer playtimes.
Jeuxvideo.com estimates around 50 hours to mainly follow one protagonist and around 120 hours to explore the content much more broadly. ActuGaming, for its part, says it played around 110 hours while being close to the end of its final route. These figures should therefore be treated as rough estimates rather than a precise promise of playtime.

The first reviews published around launch mainly emphasize Fortune's Weave's unusually large scale. ActuGaming notably highlights the richness of the four routes, the ability to switch protagonists freely, the tactical system, new classes and Blaze Arts. The outlet also points to some repetition linked to the calendar, dungeons that can sometimes feel sparse and difficulty that does not always increase consistently. Jeuxvideo.com's review likewise emphasizes the amount of content and customization possibilities, while noting that some large-scale battles can occasionally lack variety in their objectives.

Main points highlighted by the reviews

  • A very long playtime.
  • Four routes that can be switched between freely.
  • An especially rich progression system.
  • Tactical battles that remain at the heart of the experience.
  • Management and activities that can become repetitive over such a long adventure.
  • Difficulty balancing that can vary significantly depending on the section.
Game.fr did not conduct its own review of the game for this article. This section summarizes information and observations published by outlets that played the final version. The factual elements in the other sections are primarily cross-checked against Nintendo and Intelligent Systems.

What Fortune's Weave still does not fully explain: the real unknowns

To continue the calendar after this September release, also see the most anticipated video games of October 2026.

The game's release and developer interviews have cleared up much of the uncertainty that existed before September 17. A few questions are still worth following.

The exact chronology with Three Houses

The shared world and Dagda's geographical position south of Fódlan are officially confirmed. Nintendo also specifies that the two games take place in different periods. However, the public information does not provide a sufficiently explicit equivalence between the calendars to determine the exact time gap between the two stories.

Romance and supports: why the information remains contradictory after release

It would still be premature to claim that Fortune's Weave contains no romance at all. After around 130 hours of play, Jeuxvideo.com says it encountered no explicit romance or marriage option, while confirming support relationships, their dialogue and their progression through activities or battles. Conversely, IGN's Supports and Romance guide shows S Support ranks involving Eshmel. That is not enough, however, to treat every S rank as romantic or to draw up a reliable list of all possible couples and paired endings. The most rigorous conclusion therefore remains provisional: supports are confirmed, S Supports involving Eshmel are documented, but the romantic or platonic nature of each relationship and the full scope of paired endings still require complete verification.

Post-launch content

At launch, Nintendo did not present a roadmap detailed enough to establish which major DLC or story expansions may be offered later. Any future information must therefore be distinguished from simple speculation.

Precise technical performance

Nintendo officially confirms HDR support, but its French page does not provide detailed resolution or frame-rate figures for handheld and TV modes. It is therefore better to avoid presenting undocumented values as official specifications.

New Game+ and post-game content

The system lets players replay routes, retain and merge different forms of progression and return to certain chapters. However, this should not automatically be equated with a traditional “New Game+” mode without explaining the exact behavior observed in the final version.
