Aniimo: gameplay, Twining, capture and player impressions

By Filo · · 15 min read

Updated October 6, 2026: this feature explains Aniimo, its gameplay and player impressions. Comparisons, technical problems and account questions now have dedicated guides.

Quick answer: Aniimo is a free-to-play open-world action RPG about capturing creatures. Through Twining, players directly become an Aniimo to fight, explore and use its abilities. The game combines capture, real-time combat and exploration across Idyll.

What exactly is Aniimo?

Aniimo is an open-world action RPG focused on creature capture. The player takes on the role of a Nomad — Pathfinder in the English version — who explores the continent of Idyll, encounters wild species, captures them with Aniipods, develops a team and uses their abilities both in combat and while exploring. On paper, that description naturally evokes Pokémon, Palworld or other creature collectors. Pawprint Studio openly acknowledges growing up with this type of game. But the studio explains that Aniimo began with a different idea: what if the player could actually become the creature they travel with? For a historical comparison, revisit our look at Pokémon Sun and Moon in 2026. That is where Twining comes in. Aniimo does not treat creatures as simple fighters stored in a team. Some directly change the way you move through the world, approach a puzzle or handle a fight.

Twining: why Aniimo does not play like a simple Pokémon-like

Twining is the game's most distinctive mechanic. Once linked to a creature, the player can merge with it and control it directly. The official documentation describes two main uses. In combat, Twining lets the player take the Aniimo's form and use its skills in real time. In the open world, the transformation is used to exploit its natural abilities to reach places or solve situations that are impossible in human form. Depending on the creature's abilities, it becomes possible to glide, dive, dig, climb or cross certain obstacles. Xbox sums up this philosophy with a simple idea: gliding, diving or digging are an integral part of exploring Idyll.

A captured creature can become your new way to get around

This is one of the small gameplay details that best sums up Aniimo. In many collection games, capturing a new species mainly serves to complete an index or strengthen your team. Here, a creature can also open a new route. A flying or gliding ability can help cross difficult terrain, while another creature may allow you to dive or dig. Capture is therefore tied to curiosity: spotting an inaccessible passage can make you want to find the Aniimo capable of reaching it.

How do you capture Aniimo?

Capturing is not simply a matter of lowering a creature's health and throwing an item at random. Pawprint Studio highlights several approaches: Aniipods, traps, observing behavior, stealth and using the environment. The official guide published during testing notably recommends approaching a creature discreetly, taking advantage of it being asleep or dealing enough rupture damage. The official probability page also confirms that an Aniimo's state, health, level difference, Aniipod type and a rear attack can change capture chances.

Weather, time and phenomena: coming back later can genuinely change what appears

The presence of a species in the world is not completely fixed. Pawprint Studio states that some Aniimo appear depending on the environment, weather, special phenomena and the time of day. This means an area you have already visited can become interesting again later. One particularly clear official example appeared during testing: Pawprint held an event in which certain specific forms could only appear during stormy weather. The launch version continues this logic with Prismana forms, seasonal events and special spawn conditions. The game therefore encourages players less to “clear” an area once and more to return when circumstances change.

Combat: issue commands or become your Aniimo

Battles take place in real time. Pawprint's gameplay guide distinguishes between two complementary approaches:
  • Command Mode: the player coordinates the team's abilities;
  • Twine Mode: the player merges with an Aniimo and directly uses its attacks and movement.
The system also includes elemental matchups and different team roles. Fire, water, grass, lightning and other categories create advantages and resistances that need to be considered, especially against Alpha Aniimo. Twine Mode mainly creates a different feeling: instead of staying behind the team, the player is placed in the middle of the action with the combos, movement and abilities specific to the chosen creature.

Post-launch anecdote: your own Aniimo can ruin a capture

Community feedback, not an official rule: several players have reported since launch that their companion kept attacking a rare creature while they were trying to capture it. One Reddit post even describes an Aniimo eliminating a colored target before its owner could properly throw an Aniipod. The community points out that a behavior mode focused on capture helps prevent an aggressive companion from automatically finishing off the target once it is weakened. It is a good example of a detail that the tutorial may not make obvious at first.

Idyll's open world is built around creature abilities

Idyll mixes grasslands, forests, aquatic areas, vertical terrain and more fantastical locations. The appeal of the world is not just its size: Pawprint emphasizes physical interactions and Aniimo abilities. The official guide notably mentions puzzles using fire, water and wind, races, stealth, climbing and gliding. Some puzzles may even accept several solutions depending on the creature and abilities used.

More than 200 Aniimo at launch

Pawprint Studio states via Xbox Wire that more than 200 Aniimo can be discovered, encountered and collected from launch. The creatures are not distinguished only by their stats. They can have combat roles, mobility abilities, ecological behaviors and, for many of them, evolutions.

System Function
Capture Add a new creature to your collection
Evolution Progress many Aniimo into new forms
Prismana Rare forms linked to progression and probability systems
Umbral Rare variants that can appear during certain phenomena or in the world

Squarrel: a small official anecdote about combat design

For launch, Pawprint Studio introduced Squarrel and its evolution Squashel. This squirrel-like creature moves by rolling down slopes with its tail and has a fighting style built around fast combos using that same tail.

How does Aniimo differ from Pokémon and Palworld?

Aniimo shares creature collecting with Pokémon and open-world exploration with Palworld. Its real-time combat and especially Twining give creatures a different role: players can directly take their form.

To compare the three games in detail, read our Aniimo, Pokémon and Palworld comparison.

Multiplayer: exploration, PvP and Egg Heist

Aniimo supports online multiplayer and cross-platform play. Steam explicitly lists online co-op, PvP and cross-platform multiplayer. The most distinctive mode is Egg Heist, called Chasse aux œufs in the French Steam localization. It is a PvPvE mode in which a three-player team heads to the Lost Islands to search for resources and face both AI-controlled enemies and other players.

Co-op and story progression

Some players report that joining a friend's world does not necessarily share all quest progress. These are dated community reports and may change with updates. Our Aniimo crossplay, cross-save and servers guide explains the difference between playing together and carrying a save across platforms.

A camper van, crops and a full Homeland system

Aniimo has a gameplay loop very different from capture: each Nomad has a personal camper van that can be parked at campsites throughout the open world. The Homeland then lets players plant crops, build and place decorations, organize the space and let Aniimo live on their land. Pawprint expanded this part before launch following beta feedback: a larger map, house construction, more interactive furniture and new behaviors for the Aniimo living there.

This creates a fairly original change of pace: one session can move from hunting a rare creature or fighting an Alpha to managing a garden and arranging your home.

Can you continue Aniimo on another device?

Yes. With the same account and server, progress can be recovered on compatible platforms. Cross-save and crossplay answer different questions: keeping your own progress and playing with other people. See the conditions and limitations in our Aniimo crossplay and cross-save guide.

Is Aniimo free?

Yes. The base game is free-to-play and has in-game purchases. Creatures are primarily captured in the world; passes, items and currencies deserve separate analysis when judging their effect on progression. Read our Aniimo pay-to-win analysis and, for one specific system, our Filumière Tickets guide.

What do players think since launch?

Reviews quickly accumulated on Steam. During our check on September 28, 2026, Steam displayed French reviews as “Mostly Positive,” with 79% positive reviews out of 1,241 ratings. That proportion will naturally change as more players arrive. Positive feedback regularly mentions exploration, creature design and Twining. Criticism focuses more on certain interface issues, free-to-play systems and the current limitations reported by some players regarding co-op progression. This is not a Game.fr review: these points summarize dated Steam reviews and community reports. They do not replace an extended hands-on assessment by the editorial team.

What should you do if Aniimo has technical problems?

Post-launch fixes have addressed black screens, reconnection loops and display problems. If the game will not start or runs poorly, follow the steps for your symptom in our Aniimo crash and black-screen troubleshooting guide.
